Duolingo is the world's most popular language learning app. Users love its clean interface and its fun and short exercises that feel more like a game. To keep the streak going, we'll offer tips to make sure you get the most from your Duolingo lessons.

1. Think of variations of the exercises

Many of the exercises on Duolingo revolve around having you translate a sentence. However, the fun doesn't have to stop there. On your own, think of variations of the sentence you are presented. For example, how could you turn the sentence into a question? Or how could you make it into the past tense? Thinking of changes like this allows you to practice more areas without the extra effort.

Additionally, if you are having trouble with grammatical gender, you can swap nouns in the sentence to practice making changes to match the appropriate gender. Our guide covers several tips to make sure you pick the correct gender for each noun:

3 Clever Tricks to Differentiate Masculine and Feminine Nouns
Spanish has a feature, so–to–speak, called grammatical gender. It’s often one of the biggest hurdles of truly mastering the language, but we’ve got your back.

2. Don't rush through the lessons

Rushing through anything is generally a bad idea. Working through the lessons on Duolingo is no different. Completing the lessons and earning "crowns" in the app is most effective if done at a comfortable pace. This helps you remember what you've learned and keeps you from having to go back once you've forgotten.

The official Duolingo blog also provides similar guidance for getting through skill levels throughout the course and suggests "hovering". Hovering means to work on a variety of skills at the same time, rather than focus exclusively on one.

3. Write down important phrases

Do you keep seeing a specific word or phrase over and over in a lesson? Write it down! This helps you commit it to memory and serves as an easy reference.

Duolingo to the rescue

It's worth giving Duolingo a try with these tips in mind. At the time of writing, the app boasts 100 million downloads on Google Play. The Apple App Store has even praised the app in its Editors' Choice, commending that Duolingo has "long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language."
